A-Beginners-Guide-To-ChatGPT

Unless you’ve been living under a rock recently, you’ve probably at least heard of ChatGPT.  Launched in November 2022 by the same creators behind DALLE•2 and Whisper, ChatGPT has taken the internet by storm.  Fears surrounding AI takeovers, the future of copywriters, and academic dishonesty have skyrocketed since the application was launched.  Why all the commotion? Well, ChatGPT is a pretty powerful tool, but it still has some limits.  From how it works to what it’s missing, we’ve got you covered when it comes to understanding ChatGPT.

What is ChatGPT?

A cross between artificial intelligence (AI) and a chatbot, ChatGPT uses Natural Language Processing (NLP) to converse with its users regarding a wide variety of topics.  Much like you would a search engine, you can ask it questions.  However, unlike a search engine, ChatGPT does not access the internet.  It uses a process called web scraping to gather information from websites, but cannot do so in real-time.  So, when you ask it a question, it can only refer to the data set that it has access to in order to answer.  Long story short? ChatGPT is an AI that can have a surface-level discourse with a user about almost anything, but it won’t always be up-to-date or accurate.

How can it be used?

ChatGPT can be asked simple questions and provide answers, but it can also be used to generate new content.  You could prompt it to write an introduction paragraph for your essay, ask it what you should get your mom for her birthday, and even generate a list of the best Met Gala looks.  If that wasn’t shocking enough, ChatGPT can even play games like Hangman or 20 Questions with a user.  Its varied levels of interaction allow it to open doors to a wide range of future uses for AI.

What are its limitations?

Though ChatGPT has several practical applications, it is not always perfect.  Because it does not have access to the internet, the program does not always provide accurate information.  It can only compute a certain amount of information at a time.  As a whole, ChatGPT lacks a depth of knowledge on any subject.  Because of this, it does not have the ability to write at the same level as humans…yet.

How can you get started with ChatGPT?

Anyone can create a free ChatGPT account.  From there, you can begin to interact with the system by providing it with a prompt.  Prompts can range from something simple, like “What are fun things to do on a rainy day?” to something more complex, such as “Write a paragraph about how a car engine works”.  Getting used to the chatbot does not take long at all.  After using it for a short while, it’s clear that the system isn’t perfect, but it still has a wide range of potential applications.

Artificial intelligence is a big deal, and tech companies have made it clear that it isn’t going away any time soon.  Future applications of AI range from e-commerce to healthcare, and as the industry gains steam, who knows what other innovations will come about?
