Now’s the Time to Give Your Brand a Fresh New Perspective

Spring Cleaning for your marketing materials

By Valentine J. Brkich

We did it! We made it through another long, cold winter … and now spring – glorious, wonderful spring – has finally arrived. Give yourself a much-deserved pat on the back. Goodness knows it needs a little love after all that snow shoveling.

Now that warmer weather is on the horizon, it’s time for the annual tradition of spring cleaning! You know, when you finally get around to all those chores around the house that you’ve been putting off for months because of your winter depression.

Spring cleaning isn’t just about your home, though. It’s also the perfect time to tidy up your various marketing tools and materials to give them a fresh, new look. Just don’t use furniture polish on your laptop. (Trust me on this one.)

DUST OFF YOUR DATED MARKETING COLLATERAL

As the warm spring sun shines through my windows, I am rejuvenated by its welcoming light. I am also horrified at the amount of dust it illuminates on just about every surface of my home. (The Rust Belt isn’t known for its pristine air quality.)

Just as your home collects dust, so can your marketing materials. When’s the last time you updated your website with fresh, engaging content? Has your social media marketing gotten a little stale? Are your printed materials still reflecting your current goals and messaging? Get out that metaphorical dust mop, and get your marketing materials sparkling once again!

GIVE YOUR WEBSITE A DEEP CLEANING

Sure, we try to keep our home generally clean throughout the year. (We’re not animals, after all.) But of course, at least once a year, it’s good to strap on some rubber gloves, get down on our hands and knees, and give the whole thing a much-needed thorough scrubbing.

Your website is your company’s home, so to speak. You probably tweak it every now and then, but when’s the last time you gave it a meticulous overhaul? Go through your content. Is it error-free, engaging, and communicating your current messaging? Are your images and photos up to date, or do you still have that team photo from your 2005 company Christmas party? More importantly, is it SEO-optimized and taking advantage of the latest in web-design technology? There’s no better time like the present to make sure your company’s home is in tip-top shape.

THROW OUT ALL YOUR MARKETING JUNK

Every spring, I’m amazed as I walk around my house and see all the new clutter and junk we’ve somehow collected over the past year. Where did all this crap come from? It’s like some junk fairy comes in the middle of the night to fill my home with useless clutter while we’re sleeping.

The same goes for your marketing collateral. Is your closet or storeroom filled to the ceiling with marketing materials that are out of date or that you’ll never use again? Have you stockpiled a bunch of company swag that no longer reflects your brand? There’s no reason to hold on to this stuff; it only takes up valuable space that you could be putting to better use. Ditch it and move on!

Spring is a time of rebirth and renewal. Use this time to bring the same fresh perspective to your business and its marketing materials. If you do, sunnier, more profitable days are ahead!

That is, until next spring, when you’ll have to do it all over again. Adulting is hard.
