Building an Event Through Storytelling and Community Experience

When Thrive Mahoning Valley approached us about creating a first-time fundraising event to support a new Immigration Law Clinic, the goal extended far beyond planning a dinner.

The topic of immigration is deeply personal – and often politically charged – so from the beginning, the focus was on creating an event centered not on politics, but on people.

The result was A Legal Way Forward, an inaugural fundraiser designed to help the community better understand the real-life challenges individuals and families face when navigating the immigration system without trusted legal guidance.

The project began with the development of the logo and event identity. Branding intentionally emphasized themes of justice, dignity, growth, and forward movement while avoiding divisive political imagery or messaging.

We also created sponsorship materials, press outreach, eblasts, and messaging designed to position the evening as a thoughtful, community-centered initiative focused on access to justice.

One of the most meaningful elements of the evening was the guest experience itself. Each table featured a real-life story illustrating how Thrive has supported individuals and families navigating immigration-related challenges, helping guests better understand the deeply human impact of this work within the Mahoning Valley.

The thoughtful menu also became part of the storytelling. Working with the chef at B&O Station, the event featured dishes inspired by nations from which many of Thrive’s clients have immigrated from to the Mahoning Valley, creating a subtle but powerful reflection of the community’s diversity.

Thoughtfully designed pledge and donation materials helped connect guest contributions to tangible outcomes – from legal advocacy to helping families remain connected during moments of crisis.

The sold-out event ultimately reflected an important belief at MARQUEE: the best events can do more than entertain. They can educate, humanize, and create opportunities for communities to engage with complex issues in thoughtful, constructive ways.
